What the calculation does
Uses the final stitched design dimensions, including any lettering or combined elements. Only zero-degree and, when selected, ninety-degree orientations are tested. Field inputs always remain in millimeters. The 100 × 100 mm and 130 × 180 mm presets are documented Brother field descriptions, not exact conversions of rounded 4 × 4 and 5 × 7 inch labels.
Usable field = verified dimensions − 2 × allowance. Fits at 0° when design width ≤ usable width AND design height ≤ usable height. At 90°, swap design width and height. Inch inputs convert at exactly 25.4 mm per inch.
What it does not establish
A geometric fit does not verify hoop mounting, machine acceptance, stitch density, design licensing, digitizing quality or a successful stitch-out. “Largest geometric scale” is only a bounding-box ratio, not permission to resize a stitch file. Actual frame selection and manufacturer instructions control use.
