Start with the pattern

A fat quarter, jelly roll strip, layer cake square and charm pack supply different geometry. Check the pattern's cutting diagrams, seam allowances, required number of pieces and background yardage before choosing a bundle. Official source: https://www.fatquartershop.com/

Color planning

Coordinated precuts can simplify a palette but may not provide enough large uninterrupted pieces for borders, backing or binding. Compare the collection, fabric width, cuts per package and any duplicate prints. Official source: https://www.fatquartershop.com/

Cost and waste

Calculate finished usable fabric after trimming, then include shipping, extra backing fabric and replacement pieces. A lower price per bundle does not necessarily produce a lower project cost. Official source: https://www.fatquartershop.com/

Do the cutting math before comparing prices

A nominal fat quarter is commonly 18 by 22 inches, a jelly roll strip 2.5 inches wide by the fabric width, and a layer-cake square 10 by 10 inches. Actual pack counts, fabric widths and trimming allowances differ by product. For a pattern needing uninterrupted pieces longer than 10 inches, a layer cake cannot replace yardage without piecing. For strips, divide required strip length by usable width after selvage removal, then round up. Verify every dimension against the specific listing.

Check the complete basket, not the advertised bundle

Compare required precut packs plus background yardage, borders, backing, binding, batting and shipping. Match the pattern's required print count to the bundle's actual assortment; duplicates and directional prints may reduce the number of usable cuts. A matching color family is not proof that the bundle contains the right quantity of each print.

Which buyer should choose which format?

For repeat narrow strips in a documented strip-friendly quilt, compare jelly rolls. For many medium-sized squares or half-square triangles, compare layer cakes if the pattern supports them. For diverse pieces or larger cuts, compare fat quarters and yardage. If the project is a garment, quilt backing or a long border, verify continuous yardage before buying precuts.
